“Strange to say
Those whom I treated
well are those who do
me the most injury now” (77)—Barnard Translation
Nature has treated us
differently than men:
they are stronger,
yet we carry more.
We labor over life,
and love: endlessly
mending… darning
socks, kissing injuries.
Our bodies become
strange to us: time
does not treat us well.
Those whom we love
often injure us most.
We say: this is nature.
Women do well with
pain; love is strange.
